Overview
Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) is rampant in various African countries including Burundi. While Large-Scale Mining involves companies, who employ advanced technology and enormous capital to extract minerals, Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining on the other hand involves the use of rudimentary methods by individuals who are not employed by a mining company. Although ASM employs over twenty million people in developing countries, the sector still faces various challenges. This 3-day training will explore the social, environmental, political and economic challenges associated with ASM. The training will also cover the key issues relating to the formalization and legalization of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining.
